Class: 5 - Lesson: 6 Spreadsheet (Basics of Spreadsheet and Properties of Cells)

Purpose: To learn about basics of spreadsheet such as rows, columns, cells and cell addresses,editing operations and properties of cells in a spreadsheet.

OpenOffice (Spreadsheet).

Prior Knowledge

Students should know:

  • How to create a table in an OpenOffice text document.
  • How to open and save a file.

    1. What is a spreadsheet? Explain the uses of spreadsheets.

    Exercise 2



    1. Insert a new sheet, delete sheet2, and rename sheet3.

    1. Copy an image, paste it into a new spreadsheet file, and save the file.

    1. Change the cell colour of the following cells as specified: D13 to green, G18 to red, and J7 to violet.

    1. Ensure that students practise all the features.
    2. Explain row numbers and column names in a spreadsheet.
    3. Differentiate between spreadsheets and text documents.
    4. Explain the autofill feature and its use in filling dates, days and serial numbers.
    5. Help them understand inserting, moving and renaming a sheet.
    6. While teaching, use the terms row, column, cell, sheet, etc., so that students become familiar with them.
    7. Teach all the basic properties of a cell.
    8. Teachers may allow students to complete the exercise in groups.
